Japanese culinary knife-making workshop

What
This is an hands-on event. We'll first discuss some Japanese blade designs and how blade features relate to function.
Participants will create their own knife profile template, cut the profile from steel stock, grind bevels, heat treat, assemble by burning the tang into a traditionally made wenge and olive wood handle. No prior experience is necessary. Participants will be taught machine and hand tool operation. All relevant safety concerns will be thoroughly discussed.
We'll be using various hand tools, some specialized knife making equipment, and high-quality, high carbon steel.

Important Things to Remember
-
Dress for the weather and the environment. This is a working studio ... dirt, grit, and heat are always present.
-
Gloves are required ... leather is best. Bring your own or use ours. Plastic/nylon/polyester gloves are unsafe. The cheap, thin leather ones really work better ...
-
Safety glasses are required and supplied as needed. Prescription glasses will work as well.
-
Long hair should be tied back or under a hat.
-
Nylon or polyester clothing is unsafe ... cotton, wool, or leather work:)
-
Taking photos/videos is definitely permitted but mustn't interfere with others working.
-
Those under 17 must be accompanied by a related, responsible adult.
-
This is not a child-friendly environment and unsafe for children 11 and under.
